Lisbon is nowadays just the capital of Portugal, but once it was the center of a huge empire that comprised half the world! On this tour, we will explore the impressive squares of Lisbon, and you will learn how this city was once the main center of commerce and trade in Europe.

Made as a city of seven hills, its name comes from Olisipus, a name that was originally possessed before the Roman occupation, in 205 BC. Located in an area of high seismic intensity, it suffered several earthquakes over two centuries, including the earthquake of 1755, followed by a tsunami and fire, destroying the coastal area of the city. The city reconstruction plan implemented by the Marquês de Pombal is now visible on the streets of Lisbon, mainly in Lisbon. Lisbon was one of the two main centers of introduction and development of Christianity in the Iberian Peninsula.

At the top of the highest hill of Lisbon, you will see the Castle of Saint George (panoramic view) overlooking the city and the old Moorish quarter of Alfama. Many of the adventurous discoverers of Portugal departed from the area of Belem, which we will visit as well. Bringing with them new concepts and diversity of cultures, the Portuguese explorers brought wealth and the financial means to build the astonishing Jeronimos Monastery and the nearby Tower of Belem. In addition to these monuments, you will also see the Discoveries Monument, which was erected in honor of Portugal’s past heroes. The tour covers the best highlights that Lisbon has to offer.

A typical itinerary will begin with a stop at the Eduardo VII Park viewpoint for some stunning city views. Along the way, we will see Saint George’s Castle (panoramic view) overlooking the city. Next, we can stroll through downtown from Baixa-Chiado, exploring Rua Augusta to the Traditional Trade Square. Next, we will head to Belem. In Belem, we will explore the Jeronimos Monastery and the visit inside the church (still free for now), the Belem Tower, and the Discoveries Monument. If time permits, we will taste the famous Pastel de Belém.
