Full-Day Tour: Queluz, Mafra, and Ericeira - From Lisbon.
A full-day visit to the hidden gems of Queluz, Mafra, and Ericeira beaches.
Departure in the direction of Queluz with destination to the Palácio de Queluz and Pousada D. Maria I. We continue to Mafra, where it is possible to visit the beautiful Palácio de Mafra, ending our day with a fantastic walk on the Ericeira beaches.
In the city of Queluz, we highlight two monuments of extreme importance, the Palácio de Queluz, often called “the Portuguese Versailles”, and the Pousada D. Maria I, which at one time housed the royal guard of the King.
The Palácio de Queluz, with a very beautiful decoration replete with pieces of enormous value, became the official residence of royalty, especially the Portuguese prince regent, or the future D. João VI, as well as his family, who were forced to escape by the royal family to Brazil due to the French invasions. Neste palace was born D. Pedro IV or D. Pedro I of Brazil. It also served as a discreet place of imprisonment for Rainha Maria I, “Maria Louca”, while her madness continued to grieve after her.
Town of Mafra
In the town of Mafra, it is impossible to be indifferent to the monumental Palácio de Mafra, ordered to be erected by D. João V in 1711. Also known for being a town of agricultural people, we also find the famous Tapada de Mafra, with an area of 1187 hectares and surrounded by a wall with an extension of 21 km. A Tapada possui a great diversity of animal and plant species.
The palace, inserted in the center of the town, is the most luxurious national convent in the Johannine baroque style and also houses, in addition to the Convent, a Basilica and the Royal Library. The Library displays a precious collection of more than 40,000 books with golden chains, including the first edition of Lusíadas by Luís de Camões. You also have a set of six organs, unique in the world, with size and beauty.
ERICEIRA
Ericeira is a very old town, with vestiges of Phoenician times, but it was only in the 19th century that this town grew, thanks to the commercial development of the port existing at this height. The embarkation for the exile of the Portuguese royal family, an episode that marked the end of the national monarchical regime, will always be in the port of Ericeira in two of the most emblematic and dramatic locations in our history.
Its magnificent beaches, spread along the coast and the Atlantic Ocean, offer the best and most delicious fish and fresh seafood that complete a wonderful day in Ericeira. This picturesque fishing village, which has the sea as an inspiring source, is very much made for surfing and is part of the world circuit of the modality.
