Fatima and Coimbra Full-day Tour. From Porto/Coimbra.
Historical Fatima, and Coimbra full-day tour.
Discover Fátima, one of the main religious sites in the world, that welcomes thousands of pilgrims every year, and, on the same day, explore Coimbra and the oldest University in Portugal.
Your private driver-guide will pick you up at 08:30 AM from any location in Porto, Gaia, or Coimbra to take you on a day that combines spirituality and traditions. You'll be driven south, and the first stop will be in the small village of Aljustrel, the birthplace of the three little shepherds, and where you can visit their homes, now transformed into small museums. Your driver-guide will tell you more about these three children, Lúcia, Francisco, and Jacinta, and their significance to this important happening for the Catholics.
Afterward, proceed to Fátima and visit the Sanctuary built on the site where the apparitions of the Virgin Mary took place in 1917. On this specific site, a very small chapel was built, which is still possible to see. You'll also have the opportunity to visit the imposing Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, in Neoclasical Style, and the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, designed by the Greek architect Alexandros Tombazis, and an amazing example of modern architecture. Other important features spread around the site are, for example, an art installation representing a Rosary, by the Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, or a piece of the Berlin Wall, donated in 1994, as a symbol of peace.
You'll have some free time to experience by yourself the atmosphere and energy that this sacred place transmits.
Lunch will be in Fatima, in a local restaurant, together with your private driver-guide.
In the afternoon, proceed to Coimbra, where its ex-libris is waiting for you! Visit the oldest University in Portugal, dating from the 13th Century, and considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, in 2013. Visit the monumental buildings that will impress you, and learn about the history and academic traditions, and the famous costumes worn by the students, which give them a mysterious look.
Stroll down the steps of the famous "Quebra-Costas", on a walk in the old part of town, with your driver-guide, exploring narrow streets, traditional shops, and ancient buildings.
At the end of this amazing day, return to Porto.
